EVALUATE is a new DCR-led research study examining whether people diagnosed with breast or colorectal cancer 5–10 years ago are at increased risk of developing Metabolic dysfunction-associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD). MASLD is a condition characterised by excess fat in the liver and linked to metabolic dysfunction, which can progress to more serious liver disease if not identified early.

With new treatments emerging and increasing recognition of long-term health effects after cancer, it is important to better understand how common MASLD is in cancer survivors and whether this group may be at higher risk than the general population. The EVALUATE study aims to address this gap in evidence.
Participants take part in up to two study visits. The first visit includes a blood test and a liver ultrasound to assess liver health. A subset of participants will be invited for a second visit, which includes a liver MRI to provide more detailed imaging.

By identifying the prevalence of MASLD and the factors associated with increased risk, EVALUATE aims to support earlier detection and improve long-term follow-up care for cancer survivors. The results will help inform future survivorship care and clinical pathways.
