Head of Research Design Team: Perrine Janiaud
Establishment of the Research Design (RED) Team
In 2025, the Department of Clinical Research (DCR) established the Research Design (RED) team, which brings together expertise in study design, research methodology, clinical epidemiology, health technology assessment, guideline development, and related disciplines.

Its aim is to generate evidence that is methodologically rigorous, clinically relevant, and useful for healthcare decision-making. Grounded in evidence-based medicine, the RED team supports the full research lifecycle, from early concept development and study design to synthesis, interpretation, and dissemination.

Working closely with the other research support teams across the DCR, RED helps assemble the right expertise for each project and ensures that methodological rigor is matched by operational excellence and feasibility.

The RED team is headed by Dr. Perrine Janiaud, a clinical epidemiologist and research methodologist with a longstanding interest in improving the design and conduct of clinical research. Alongside leading her own research projects, she supports investigators in developing research questions, selecting appropriate study designs, and translating clinical challenges into rigorous research programs. Her experience, combined with her involvement in large collaborative research initiatives, positions her well to lead and further develop the activities of the RED team.

Defining research questions that matter in practice
-
Developing robust and feasible study concepts
-
Selecting optimal and innovative study designs, including pragmatic, decentralized, adaptive, and other advanced approaches
-
Ensuring meaningful and actionable evidence through thoughtful outcome selection, recruitment feasibility assessment, and sound overall planning based on empirical evidence
-
Developing high-quality protocols, grant applications, reports, and publications, including strengthening competitiveness for funding schemes such as SNSF IICT
-
Contributing to evidence synthesis and translation, including systematic reviews, meta-analyses, stakeholder interviews, Delphi processes, and guideline development
-
Advancing methodological innovation and meta-research to improve how evidence is generated, evaluated, and applied
